Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Testing

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is more than just being forgetful, distracted, or full of energy—it’s a neurodevelopmental condition that people are born with that affects how the brain manages attention, organization, impulse control, emotion regulation and follow-through.

ADHD can show up in many different ways. For some, it means losing track of time, getting stuck in hyper-focus, struggling to concentrate at work or school, or feeling constantly overwhelmed. For others, it might look like restlessness, difficulty following directions, or intense emotions that feel hard to manage. ADHD often presents differently in adults than it does in kids—and it can also look different between males and females.

While boys are more likely to display hyperactivity, girls often experience more internal symptoms, like racing thoughts or low self-esteem. What many people with ADHD have in common is the feeling that everyday life is harder than it should be, no matter how hard they try.

If you or your child have ever wondered “Why is it so hard to focus?” or “Why can’t I seem to keep up like everyone else?”—you’re not alone. The good news? Support and clarity are available, and it starts with understanding your symptoms.

Please Note: ADHD tends to be highly hereditary, meaning it often shows up in families. If a parent, sibling, or close relative has been diagnosed, it’s worth exploring whether the symptoms might be showing up in you or your child, too.

ADHD Testing in Ankeny

What is QbCheck?

Thrive Counseling Center offers ADHD testing in Ankeny, IA using QbCheck for both children and adults. QbCheck is a diagnostic screening tool, NOT a full psychological evaluation and should not be used in place of a full psychological evaluation. QbCheck is an FDA cleared, 15-20-minute computer-based objective test that measures core ADHD symptoms: activity, attention and impulsivity.  Results are analyzed and presented in a report that compares a client's results with a group of people of the same age and gender who do not have ADHD.

QbCheck is an essential part of the ADHD pathway, and the results are used in conjunction with other ADHD assessment tools to aid clinical judgement. This test also provides a valuable baseline measurement that can help to evaluate any future changes in your activity, attention and impulsivity.  After receiving treatment for ADHD, you can perform the test again to see how your symptoms are improving.

QbCheck ADHD Testing Ankeny

How is QbCheck performed?

The ADHD test is performed on a computer in our office in Ankeny, IA.

During the test a number of symbols are shown on the computer screen. The task is to push the responder button when a certain symbol appears on the screen. The test takes 15-minutes for ages 6-12 and 20-minutes for 12+.  The test is not dependent on your language, reading or mathematic skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of the QbCheck?

The QbCheck results can help find out why you may be having difficulties in concentrating, feeling fidgety, having trouble listening, or having too much energy at night. Some of these feelings may be more noticeable in school or at work. The QbCheck results can help determine the type of support you may need in the future to help you feel more confident.

Does the camera film me?

You are not being filmed at any time.  The only information the computer camera captures is how much the marker has moved during the test. Please don’t wear anything sparkly or with a reflective strip as this will interfere with the test equipment.

What if I get it wrong?

You can’t get it wrong. QbCheck is about tracking how you respond and will help gather valuable information to help support you in the future. It is not a pass or fail test.

Can children younger than 6 perform the test?

Unfortunately, the minimum age for QbCheck is 6-years-old.  We do, however, offer ADHD testing and treatment in Ankeny for ages 6-60.

When is the best time to take the QbCheck?

First thing in the morning is typically the best time to complete the testing.  We highly recommend that kids and adolescents come before school or as early in the day as possible.

Remember you will also have the opportunity to ask questions at your appointment so do not worry if your question is not on our list.

Clinical Research

Through independent collaborations with world leading researchers in the field, more than 30 studies have been performed with QbTest or QbCheck to address their validity, clinical utility and usefulness in treatment follow up.
